FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
"Silica is the most important trace mineral for human health."
Dr. Barbara Hendel
Hello, and welcome to EarthyHealth.com, you’re one-stop shop for high quality food-grade diatomaceous earth. Our food-grade diatomaceous earth is a high-grade fresh water type, and many people (and their pets) have experienced excellent health benefits from taking this natural, affordable supplement.
Diatomaceous earth (also known as D.E.) is fossilized shell flour made from the remains of microscopic one-cell plant organisms called “diatoms”. In their time, diatoms lived in the western United States lakes, as well as other parts of the world. These infinitesimal fossils are mined from their underwater beds and dried up lake bottoms and are thousands of years old, so diatomaceous earth has an unlimited shelf life so long as it’s kept dry.
Diatomaceous earth is mined, milled, and processed into a multitude of types for a wide variety of uses. “Filtering” and “Filler” are two of the main uses known for diatomaceous earth, but D.E. is also used in paints, cosmetics, drugs, chemical insecticides, and many other everyday products. Because the milling produces particles of different shapes and sizes, it is important not to use the filtering type of diatomaceous earth for agricultural purposes. Also, pool-filter grade diatomaceous earth has heated and chemically treated, and will poison any animal or human who ingests it; therefore, it is always of the utmost importance to only obtain food-grade diatomaceous earth for uses in and around your household.
Diatoms are the “grass” of the oceans and lakes, and just as land grass is the staple food for land based animals, diatoms (algae) are the staple food of the ocean or fresh water grazers. If it were magnified 7000 times, diatomaceous earth would look like spinney little honeycombs.
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is EPA approved to be mixed with other grains in order to control mealworms and other revolting pests, and has been exempted from tolerance requirements as an inert, active ingredient in chemical pesticides. Diatomaceous earth is also EPA approved against indoor and outdoor crawling insects, USDA approved as an anti-caking agent for animal feed, and FDA approved for internal and external use. It also has a rating of Food Chemical Codex Grade.
Our diatomaceous earth is organic OMRI listed Codex Food Chemical Grade. It is non-treated and non-calcined fresh water diatomaceous earth, and is mined, crushed, sifted, bagged, pure white in color, and contains less than .5% silicon. There are also food-grade diatomaceous earth products that are yellow or tan in color, indicating a higher content of iron. Those products which are grey in color contain more clay.
